The carnivore diet.
You’ve probably seen this around social media lately. Paul Saladino (Carnivore MD) is the biggest leading voice on this diet right now.
The traditional carnivore diet is only animal products such as meat, animal organs and dairy.
But the diet Saladino recommends is incorporating some fruits.
Is the carnivore diet unhealthy?
Short answer: Maybe not. We, as a community, are still discovering the good and the bad about this diet but it shows promising results so far.
We’ve been told by experts on nutrition that we need plants to be healthy.
But new information states that maybe plants aren’t the heroes they’re made out to be. And that NOT eating them could actually be beneficial.
This is because plants DON’T want their roots, stems, leaves, and seeds (which include seeds, nuts, grains and legumes) to be eaten. Any less than animals do except animals can run, kick and bite – plants can’t do that.
The Problem With Plants
The issue that carnivore diet advocates have with plants is the chemicals that come with them.
Yes, plants have fiber and micronutrients but they also have harmful chemicals to humans, antinutrients and toxins. (cows, for example, have the necessary biology to digest grass just fine – humans don’t have that same biology).
Harmful plant chemicals include:
-tannins
-saponins
-isothiocyantes
-lectins
-oxalates
-cyanogenic glycosides
These “toxins” get into our system and can wreak havoc.
Chaz’s Opinion
My opinion of the carnivore diet is that it serves a purpose for a specific person who may need it.
I believe there are so many different diets out there because human biology can differ between people.
If your body can handle plants then go for it.
But if you feel bloated or have other chronic issues like low energy, headaches, arthritis, body aches, brain fog, or other gut problems then maybe trying a new diet could work.
For me, plants mess me up big time.
Raw broccoli will give me gut aches for hours.
Leafy greens don’t make me feel good and nuts inflame my intestines.
So I have to stay away from those types of foods and especially GLUTEN. Gluten is obvious but those others aren’t as apparent.
I feel a lot better going gluten free and mostly plant free too.
My mom is also now following a carnivore (with fruit) diet. Recently her arthritis, joint pain and bloating have reduced significantly.
So you have to find out what works for you. I’m sharing this to give you another option for yourself.
